Shkodër is one of Albania's oldest cities, with a history stretching back to the Illyrian kingdom of Labeatae. Strategically positioned at the confluence of the Buna and Drin rivers at the southern end of the Balkans' largest lake, it was a major Venetian trading centre for centuries before falling to the Ottomans in 1479. Today it is a vibrant cultural city, gateway to the Albanian Alps, and home to the legendary Rozafa Castle.
One of Albania's most visited and most legendary castles, perched on a rocky hill with breathtaking views over Lake Shkodër and the confluence of the Buna, Drin, and Kir rivers. The castle has Illyrian origins and was later held by the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans. Named for the legend of Rozafa, a young bride whose sacrifice in the castle walls was said to ensure its stability.
A magnificent 19th-century Franciscan cathedral that was converted into a basketball arena under Communist rule and restored as a church after 1991. Its twin towers now define the Shkodër skyline and the building has become a powerful symbol of Albanian resilience, faith, and cultural survival. The interior was fully restored and contains beautiful religious art.
A unique museum housing over 500,000 photographs and negatives from the Marubi dynasty, Albania's pioneering photographers who documented life in the country from 1858 onwards. The archive is a staggering visual record spanning the Ottoman period, independence, two world wars, and Communist Albania; one of the most remarkable photographic archives in the Balkans.
A remarkable 18th-century Ottoman stone bridge of 13 arches spanning the Kir River in a scenic gorge about 8km from Shkodër. One of the best-preserved Ottoman bridges in Albania, it is a beautiful and peaceful spot, and far less visited than its quality deserves. An easy day trip from Shkodër.
A surviving tower from Shkodër's Venetian-era fortifications, built during the period when the city was a major outpost of the Venetian Republic in the 15th century. The tower stands as a reminder of the city's long history as a trading crossroads between East and West.
