🌍 UNESCO World Heritage🏯 10+ Historic Sites🏘️ Ottoman Tower Houses
Known as the "City of Stone," Gjirokastër is one of the best-preserved Ottoman cities in the Balkans and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. Perched on the slopes of the Gjerë Mountains above the Drinos River, its distinctive grey-stone tower houses, imposing medieval castle, and ancient bazaar streets create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Albania. The city was the birthplace of both Communist dictator Enver Hoxha and beloved novelist Ismail Kadare.
A massive fortress dominating the city skyline, the castle dates to the 12th century with major Ottoman expansions. Inside you'll find a military museum housing a captured US Air Force jet, ancient cannons, and armour. The panoramic views from the ramparts over the stone city and the valley below are breathtaking — it's one of the most dramatic castle settings in all of the Balkans.
